Review: What Doesn't Destroy Us by M.N. Forgy
♥♥♥ 2.5 Stars ♥♥♥
Hmm...That's what I said when I finished reading this book. I didn't know how to feel about it. Some parts I kind of liked, but others I just didn't care for.
The story starts off with Dani and her mother running away from New York, because of some threat they have on their lives. With very little explanation, Dani's mother takes her to the Devil's Dust MC, where she will finally meet her father. I did not like her mother from pretty much the start. She withheld information, was acting all shady, and a horrible temper and would always put Dani down. So, I totally got why Dani hated her mother so much. However, Dani was also really annoying, and I didn't like the way she treated people at times. I had trouble following her thought process, because a lot of the time, it didn't make sense to me. Especially when it came to the Sargent-At-Arms she has an attraction to, Shadow. The attraction between them seems to occur from nowhere and it explodes just as fast. I could not connect to them as a couple, nor did I ever truly feel a chemistry between them. A lot of it seemed forced to me.
Shadow was alright for a while, but then I got so mad at what a jerk he became. I just couldn't believe how he treated Dani. I was honestly surprised Dani could forgive him so easily. The only character I seemed to really like was Bobby, and he was Shadow's best friend. The drama in this book was a little too much for me. I became annoyed with all the fighting that Dani and Shadow seemed to be doing, even though they got off on it. At least the steam wasn't bad. But, I didn't get how the fell in love with each other so fast. I mean after one kiss, Dani was already jealous of any girl going near Shadow.
This did have potential, but the writing of this book made the story not flow well. I wish I could say I loved the main characters but they acted a tad bit too immature and had mood swings going from hot to cold in an instant. I also didn't like the double standards of how Shadow reacted when a guy went near Dani, but if a girl went near him, it's no biggie. The last third of the book did get a bit more interesting, so I was happy about that. A lot of things happened that was able to hold my attention. And then a cliffhanger happens, one I was totally not expecting. But, it did make me curious about what will happen next. Overall, the book was not great but it was okay, I probably will read the next book, just to see if it gets any better. I may have not enjoyed like I would have wanted, but I have seen many reviews of those who have. So, who knows, you might enjoy it as well.
